Hot on the heels of The Telegraph’s announcement that Cape Town was voted as the world’s greatest city for the sixth consecutive year, it has also been named the World’s Leading Festival and Events Destination at this year’s World Travel Awards in Lisbon, Portugal. With all the awards rolling in its easy to take for granted what an incredible we live it, so we thought we’d remind you!
It’s hard to go anywhere in Cape Town and not take a moment to appreciate the beauty that is all around. Table Mountain is almost always visible and is the perfect backdrop for any photo. But, there’s so much more; the perfect blue Atlantic Ocean, the Twelve Apostles, Silvermine Nature Reserve, Kirstenbosch, and the list goes on and on. Think about that next time you’re in a foreign capital surrounded by brick and mortar and little else.
Amazing Live Acts
Every year the Cape Town live music scene just gets better and better. Regular events like the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts series bring together the entire city. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival is a perennial favourite that draws well over 30 000 guests annually. It’s Africa’s largest jazz festival and the 4th largest in the world! Even for those who can’t attend the main event, there’s always a free concert in Greenmarket Square so everyone can share in the fun.
Epic Sports Events
For competitors and spectators, few cities can offer the variety and quality of sporting events that Cape Town does. From the Cape Town Cycle Tour (the world’s largest timed cycle race) to the Old Mutual Two Oceans Race and the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, there’s no shortage of opportunities to test your fitness. If all that sounds like a bit too much effort for you, pull up a seat and watch! There’s also the annual HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series – Cape Town Sevens as well as the Volvo Ocean Race, both crowd-pleasing favourites.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about Cape Town though. As executive mayor, Dan Plato put it, “this [award] is not just an award for Cape Town; it is an award for South Africa and Africa. We want Cape Town to position itself as a place where the world can access Africa and Africa can access the world. Continuing to host events of an international standard will make this vision a reality.”
