One of the world’s largest global airport customer satisfaction survey, Skytrax World Airport Awards, has ranked Cape Town International Airport as the best in Africa, and number 21 in the world.
The survey is based on 13 million airport questionnaires from over 100 different countries. It ranks the top 550 airports around the world in terms of traveller experience, check-ins, transfers, security, queues and shopping facilities.
A Berman Brothers development
Cape Town International Airport was the Berman Brothers’ first major development after winning the tender in 1994. After this tender was awarded, Paul and Saul decided to set up The Berman Bros Group, and later Berman Brothers Properties.
Global airport rankings
Topping the list is Singapore’s Changi Airport, taking the number one spot for the sixth year running. Following Changi is South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, Hong Kong International Airport and Doha’s Hamad International Airport.
In terms of specific terminals, London Heathrow’s Terminal 2 claimed the top spot, followed by Munich’s Terminal 2 and Changi’s Terminal 3.
Cape Town International Airport ranked 21st overall and is the best in Africa. Durban’s King Shaka International Airport placed 26th and Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport came in at 32. These are the only African airports that featured in the top 100.
Growth for Cape Town
In recent years, several international airlines have announced new non-stop flights to the Mother City. “Wesgro has been on a major drive to increase international and regional flights through its Air Access partnership and their work is paying off,” says Flight Centre Travel Group marketing and product general manager Susan Garrett.
This partnership has added 13 new routes and 14 route expansions to Cape Town since 2015. This has accounted for an additional 1.5 million passengers passing through the airport, prompting massive construction upgrades such as the main runway realignment, additions to Terminal 2 and a new domestic arrivals area.
“Although it is true that much of the growth in arrivals to Cape Town comes from international visitors, we’ve also seen significant growth in domestic arrivals to Cape Town since 2015,” says Garrett. “In fact, [we’ve had] almost a million additional domestic arrivals in one year, according to statistics from ACSA,” she adds.
Cape Town ranked number two in the world for luxury property.
